Five happy things

I have to get a filing today. Also Melbourne is cold and bleak. But let’s not talk about that. Instead let’s talk about nice things. Here is a list of things that have been making me happy.
On Monday, we caught the tram down to the huge park that encircles Melbourne Zoo and went on a long sun-drenched walk. Boyfriend took photos and we ate chips out of my backpack as we wandered along the many winding paths. At the moment my craving for sun is at an almost deranged level – I practically run outside to sit in any patch of sunlight the moment it bursts through the clouds. Savouring moments of brightness in helping.

My tiny radish seedlings have burst through the soil! And they’re growing with reckless abandon, defying the packet that said it might be too cold. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love with radishes but now I barely remember a time before I put them in everything. Also, I planted some jonquil bulbs and they’re starting to peep up too! If there’s one good thing about this cold, it’s that bulbs can grow, so I thought I should probably grow some.

I’ve left the house a lot of times this week. This is due to a collection of opportunities, colliding by chance – EWF, friends going overseas, friends moving closer. At the beginning of the week, I felt a bit tired by the prospect of so many nights out. But people are good. Seeing yourself through other people’s eyes can be almost intoxicating. I’m struggling a bit to fall back into being a writer, after writing so little for so long. It is nice to be reminded that there are people who will support me and my work, whatever I do.

In the last couple of months, I have started in earnest to write a big project I’ve had at the back of my head for a long time. I’d almost forgotten what it feels like to write fiction, the way it takes over so much of your brain, all the moments spend hastily scrawling notes. At the moment the ratio of actual writing to moments of despair about a lack of confidence in myself and the project is about one to one. But I’m getting there. It’s happening. I hope it will be good.

I totally forgot how much easier it is to talk to people at social events when you can just talk about Master Chef. I am pretty much following the plot of Orphan Black this season (on SBS on Demand). Boyfriend and I are going through a heist movie/spy drama phase – currently the terribly titled but very good London Spy (which is on Netflix). And if you’re not watching Cleverman, be prepared for me to personally harass you until you watch Cleverman because no one is getting away without watching Cleverman (IT IS ON IVIEW WATCH IT NOW). Predictably, the TV section of this blog is the longest ooops.

Hearing about little things that have been making people happy is one of my most favourite things. If you would like to tell me about something that has made you happy, I would like that.
