July 10th

Dear July,
This morning we packed up the last of the party, put some leftovers in takeaway containers and headed into town. We picked up the hire car and drove off into the countryside.
I love regional Australia. I know that’s a strangely huge thing to love but I love it all the same. I love the way the sky opens up when you leave the city. I love the way the soundscape changes, from distant traffic to nearby birds. I love the little shops and the inexplicable monuments (why are there so many decommissioned military vehicles in random parks?). I love how quiet it is. How easy it is to be alone. I love the way people say hello when you pass them in the street. I miss all these things. I’m growing to love things about Melbourne too but not with the same aching intensity that I love the parts beyond city borders.
