July 17th

Dear July,
When I was very small my dad used to read to me. We read Treasure Island multiple times before I was five, curled up before bed time. I later found out that this was because Treasure Island was the first book my dad had really loved growing up. I also found out, while reading it for the first time as an adult, that he skipped the really gruesome bits. Later, my brother joined us and we moved on to the Hobbit. My favourite part was always the bit with the trolls. I remember going to get mum so she could finish the chapter because dad had fallen asleep mid sentence.
Those nights reading with dad are somewhere deep in my personality – a vital little piece in the foundation. My memories of them are fuzzy and vague, as very old, well worn memories tend to be.
Today is my dad’s birthday. I love him very much.
